Areva could build UK reactors

French nuclear group Areva has made an early declaration of interest in building new nuclear reactors in Anglesey and Gloucestershire, in partnership with a Chinese company, after the withdrawal of previous backers left the projects in doubt.

Luc Oursel, chief executive of Areva, said on Saturday that the group would bid for the Horizon nuclear venture, which includes sites at Wylfa on Anglesey and Oldbury in Gloucestershire.

German energy groups RWE and Eon put the projects up for sale in March, blaming the German government’s decision to phase out nuclear power after the crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi reactor in Japan.
