The entry of three Chinese state fisheries patrol vessels into territorial waters around the contested Senkaku Islands has prompted a sharp protest from Japan, further raising friction in one of east Asia’s most dangerous flashpoints.
Japan summoned the Chinese ambassador to denounce yesterday’s intrusion as “extremely serious” and “unacceptable”.
China’s Xinhua state news agency said the three vessels were on a “routine patrol” of Chinese territory. Beijing calls the islands the Diaoyu.
