A teenage Chinese swimmer was on Monday at the centre of the Olympic Games’ first controversy over allegations of doping.
The extraordinary world-record performance by Ye Shiwen, 16, in Saturday’s women’s 400m individual medley final has raised eyebrows, with a leading swimming coach describing it as “disturbing”.
Ye took more than a second off the world record and five seconds off her personal best, and completed the final 50m in a time faster than US swimmer Ryan Lochte in winning the men’s equivalent race.
