Wife of fallen China party boss faces conviction for businessman’s murder

Chinese prosecutors have accused Gu Kailai, wife of fallen politician Bo Xilai, of being the “main perpetrator” in the alleged murder of UK businessman Neil Heywood, signalling that the country’s most anticipated trial in decades will produce a guilty verdict.

The trial was wrapped up in less than eight hours yesterday in Hefei, capital of central Anhui province. Criminal lawyers said they expected the decision within six weeks.

The case is widely seen as part of the Communist party’s efforts to resolve a power struggle triggered by Mr Bo’s bid for a post on the politburo standing committee as the country prepares for a new generation of leaders later this year.
