Japan to reopentalks with N Korea

The Japanese government is to hold talks with North Korea for the first time in four years with the aim of retrieving the remains of Japanese nationals who died there in the closing stages of the second world war.

Representatives of the two governments will meet in Beijing on August 29 to agree on an agenda for an official meeting expected soon afterwards, according to the Japanese government.

The meeting, which comes amid tensions between Japan and South Korea over disputed islands known as Takeshima in Japanese and Dokdo in Korean, is the first since Kim Jong-eun succeeded his father, Kim Jong-il, last December.
