South African police fired on protesting mineworkers yesterday, in the worst violence to afflict South Africa’s mining industry in recent years.
The clashes have shocked the global mining industry, which relies heavily on South Africa to produce key commodities such as thermal coal, platinum, gold and ferroalloys.
Many of the world’s largest mining companies have offices in Johannesburg, South Africa’s commercial capital, and the violence could deter further investment.
