Isaac tests Louisiana’s defences seven years after the devastation of Katrina

Hurricane Isaac ripped across south-eastern Louisiana yesterday, breaching rural flood defences and leaving half a million people without power.

The storm, which struck the US coast on the seventh anniversary of the devastation wrought by hurricane Katrina, forged inland with torrential rains and 75mph winds. Its slow pace – 6mph – worsened its effect on lives and property across the region.

Isaac has drawn attention from the Republican party convention in Tampa, Florida where Mitt Romney, the nominee for the White House, and Paul Ryan, the vice-presidential candidate, were set to deliver key speeches in their quest to unseat Barack Obama in the November election.
