Xi Jinping, China’s leader-in-waiting, weighed into the country’s dispute with Japan over a group of islands in the East China Sea on Wednesday, in a forceful intervention after almost two weeks of unexplained absence from the public eye.
In a meeting with Leon Panetta, US secretary of defence, Mr Xi said Japan “should rein in its behaviour and stop any words and acts that undermine China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity”, according to Xinhua, the official news agency.
The talks with Mr Panetta were Mr Xi’s first appearance on the international stage for almost two weeks. Last weekend, Mr Xi reappeared in state media in a brief mention in news about an event he attended.
