First hint of criminal charges for Bo

China has given the first indication that Bo Xilai, the purged politician whose scandal threw the ruling Communist party into its biggest crisis in more than 20 years, could face criminal charges.

As the party clears the way for its once-in-a-decade leadership transition, Xinhua, the official news agency, on Wednesday indicated that Mr Bo, then party secretary of the municipality of Chongqing, had dismissed a report by his police chief that Mr Bo’s wife was under suspicion of murdering Neil Heywood, the family’s business consultant.

While the scene described by the agency was reported earlier this year by foreign media including the FT, the Xinhua report marks the first official account apparently linking Mr Bo to a criminal offence.
