Dispute dents vehicle sales in China

Vehicle sales in China, the world’s largest car market, fell in September for the first time since January, largely as the result of anti-Japanese sentiment that suppressed sales of Japanese-branded cars on the mainland.

Wholesale deliveries of passenger cars were nearly flat year on year at 1.32m, while total vehicle sales slipped 1.7 per cent year on year to 1.62m compared with 1.65m in September a year ago, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers said in a statement yesterday.

“Declines in sales of Japanese brands made the biggest contribution to the gloomy passenger vehicle market in September,” CAAM said.
