Amnesty warns over land grabs in China

Forced evictions in China have risen sharply over the past couple of years as debt-laden local governments seeking to shore up their precarious finances have raised funds by selling seized land to developers, Amnesty International said on Thursday.

In a report documenting 40 evictions between January 2010 and January 2012, the human rights group partly blamed the $628.5bn stimulus package unleashed by Beijing in response to the 2008 financial crisis.

Amnesty said Beijing had relied on local governments to fund the majority of investment outlined by the stimulus package, leaving those authorities even more reliant on land sales.
