Nobel Prize Q&A

Should I be worried I’ve never heard of Shapley or Roth?

Not in the slightest. The majority of academic economists beaver away without becoming household names. The prize this year is all about rewarding the useful stuff economists do day in, day out, rather than choosing one of the high and mighty. In this case, the prize recognises attempts to understand life’s thorny problems and find the best mechanism to make people happier. Shapley and Roth have not found the answer to life, the universe and everything, just incremental ways to improve the way we organise ourselves.

When we’ve got markets for food, derivatives, you name it, why does matching matter?
