Chinese pollution protests force city into plant U-turn

A Chinese city has backed down over plans to expand a petrochemical plant after a week-long protest by residents worried about the environmental impact.

The demonstrations by thousands of people in the eastern port of Ningbo, in Zhejiang province, which turned violent at times, are the latest in a series of protests against polluting factories in China.

Coming only two weeks before Beijing embarks on a leadership transition, the latest protest shows how the government is facing a new challenge as people become more conscious of environmental concerns.
