US begins clean-up after Sandy

A waterlogged Wall Street struggled to return to work yesterday as US president Barack Obama joined New Jersey’s Republican governor to inspect the impact of hurricane Sandy, extending the storm’s bipartisan interruption of the heated election for a third day.

The fallout from the devastating storm continued to restrain Mitt Romney, the Republican challenger, who returned to campaigning in Florida but focused his speeches on the economy rather than criticism of Mr Obama.

Mr Romney’s campaign had to compete with television pictures of Chris Christie, New Jersey governor and an often harsh critic of Mr Obama, touring the damaged coastline at Atlantic City side-by-side with the president.
