Noda warns against excessive nationalism

Japan’s prime minister has warned against excessive hostility to foreigners before an election that many analysts say will mark a rightward shift in Japanese politics, amid a flaring territorial dispute with China.

In an interview with the Financial Times, Yoshihiko Noda stressed the need for calm handling of the dispute with China over the Senkaku islands in the East China Sea.

China’s increasingly assertive pursuit of its maritime territorial claims will be a key campaign issue in Japan’s December 16 general election and at a series of regional summits starting yesterday in Cambodia.
