Shinzo Abe, Japan’s prime minister, has sent a special envoy to South Korea in an effort to improve bilateral ties that had become strained over disputed islands in the Sea of Japan.
Fukushiro Nukaga, a lawmaker in the ruling Liberal Democratic party and secretary-general of the Japan-South Korea lawmakers’ league, met Park Geun Hye, incoming South Korean president, in Seoul on Friday and handed her a letter from the Japanese premier.
Mr Abe told Mr Nukaga, a former finance minister, to convey the message that “South Korea is Japan’s most important neighbour, with which we share values such as democracy and market capitalism”, according to Japanese media.
