A year ago the president of the Postal Savings Bank of China quoted a classic poem to describe the journey ahead for his ambitious institution.
“A time will come to ride the wind and cut the waves / I’ll hoist my cloudlike sail and cross the sea which raves,” Tao Liming, the bank’s president, said in his 2012 Chinese lunar new year message.
This couplet, from eighth century Tang dynasty poet Li Bai, was meant to describe the Postal Savings Bank’s transformation from a stodgy savings network to a bank at the cutting edge of rural development.
