China wary amid push for workers’ union poll

When Song Xuegang and his co-workers at Foxconn’s factory in Zhengzhou were abused by supervisors for assembling Apple iPhones too slowly, he tried to get help from the labour union, but was ignored.

In October, a fight between quality control staff and workers over the same issue triggered a day-long stoppage – an incident that might have been avoided if the earlier complaint had been addressed.

An increasing number of conflicts like these between workers and management have convinced Chinese authorities that the country’s workers need more effective representation.
