China bans ads selling gifts for state’s ‘tigers and flies’

China has banned TV advertisements touting expensive watches, gold coins and other luxury items as “gifts for leaders”, fearing they will undermine public faith in government.

China has been hit by ­corruption scandals, with officials exposed for owning several homes, luxury watches and other trappings of illicit wealth.

Xi Jinping, who becomes president in March, has vowed to tackle the “tigers and flies” – the high- and low-ranking officials – who have benefited from graft.
