North Korea has conducted a third nuclear test, ignoring pleas from China, its closest ally, and putting it on a fresh collision course with the west over its atomic programme.
Pyongyang confirmed the detonation three hours after foreign observers detected unusual seismic activity in the north of the country.
Official state media said the nuclear test was “carried out at a high level in a safe and perfect manner”.
