Brazil rainbow diplomacy wins – now for the hard part

Was it the man or the country? Roberto Azevêdo is a patient negotiator, a seasoned trade diplomat and in many ways a perfect pick as World Trade Organisation chief.

He already knows his way around the WTO, is fully briefed on the issues, and is well-liked around the developing world, not least for taking on the farm-subsidy policies of the US and Europe – and winning.

If anyone can revive the Doha round of world trade talks, launched 12 years ago and now almost dead, it is he.
