Brussels has issued a final warning to Beijing to curb subsidies to its telecommunications network equipment suppliers or face EU trade sanctions.
The warning came as the European Commission, the EU’s executive arm, gave Karel De Gucht, trade commissioner, its backing – “in principle” – to open anti-subsidy and anti-dumping investigations of China’s leading telecom equipment suppliers, Huawei Technologies and ZTE Corp.
The commission’s decision was intended to prod Beijing to the bargaining table after months of fruitless discussions by dispelling any notion that Mr De Gucht could be sidelined in a highly contentious case.
