German leaders accuse Hollande of ‘shaking the foundations’ of EU

Leading members of Germany’s ruling Christian Democratic Union party have fiercely criticised François Hollande, accusing France’s president of “shaking the foundations of the European Union” just hours before the two countries’ leaders met in Paris to repair relations.

German concern about the French government’s resistance to economic reform and hostility to EU pressure emerged after Mr Hollande said that it was not for the European Commission “to dictate” reforms to Paris.

Brussels yesterday demanded “urgent” pension reforms, cuts in labour costs and a reduction in public spending by France in exchange for a two-year extension to get its deficit below 3 per cent of gross domestic product, as required by EU rules.
