Former Taiwan president Chen Shui-bian has attempted suicide in the shower of the prison where he has been incarcerated for corruption while in office.
The attempt on Sunday, using a towel, was stopped by prison guards and Chen was unharmed, according to the Justice Department.
Chen was the first opposition politician to be elected to the highest office in Taiwan, ruling from 2000 to 2008, and overturning more than six decades of rule by the nationalist Kuomintang party. He was once feted as a symbol for democracy on the ethnically Chinese, but independently ruled, island. However, his legacy has been tarnished by corruption.
