Chinese illegal miners held in Ghana swoop

Ghana has arrested 124 Chinese for illegal mining in the largest such crackdown yet, highlighting China’s difficulties in limiting friction over its increasing investment in Africa.

The detentions came after Xi Jinping, China’s president, chose to visit three African countries on his first overseas trip in March as part of a charm offensive. Beijing’s bilateral trade with the continent was more than $200bn last year and more than 2,000 Chinese companies have invested a total of $20bn.

Yu Jie, the political director at the Chinese embassy in Accra, the capital, said the 124 miners were being held at an immigration detention centre in the city. He said they had been allowed consular access and were expected to be deported soon.
