Cuba has claimed ownership of the weapons that Panamanian authorities found on a North Korean-flagged ship sailing towards the Panama Canal.
Havana said the shipment – hidden under about 200,000 sacks of Cuban sugar – was “obsolete defensive” arms that were being sent for repair. It said the ship was sailing from Cuba to North Korea with a cargo of, mostly, 10,000 tonnes of sugar.
Panama’s President Ricardo Martinelli, who inspected the vessel on Monday night, said he suspected it was carrying “sophisticated missile equipment”. Officials said it was carrying “undeclared military cargo” in a potential breach of UN sanctions.
