Cautious optimism after Iran talks begin

Iranian and US officials said they were making good progress towards an interim agreement on Iran’s nuclear programme that would buy time for a longer, final negotiation.

Speaking after the start of a crucial two days of talks in Geneva, Abbas Araqchi, the Iranian deputy foreign minister, said there was some prospect of an interim agreement this week.

“The aim of both sides is to sign the agreement,” he said in Geneva. “We are currently working on the issue but it is too early to say if we will have a written agreement or if it will be deferred to the next meeting or next ones.”
