When Neeraj Kanwar, managing director of India’s Apollo Tyres, first met his joint venture partner, Che Hongzhi, chairman of Chengshan Group, he was baffled by the encounter.
Mr Che “kept saying, ‘I’ve been a good son and the father is good. Now the father is divorcing me and the stepfather is coming in’,” Mr Kanwar testified last week, still plainly puzzled by the May 15 meeting in Beijing.
“He was trying to say something to us that we really didn’t understand.”
