US and Cuban leaders shook hands at a memorial for Nelson Mandela yesterday, underscoring the anti-apartheid hero’s gift for uniting friends and foes as more than 100 current and former leaders joined thousands of South Africans in remembering the statesman’s legacy.
But the tribute was overshadowed by a display of disgruntlement with South Africa’s current leadership, as many in the 94,000-seater sports stadium in Soweto booed their own president, Jacob Zuma.
The repeated and loud jeering struck a discordant note over a memorial that saw Barack Obama of the US and Raúl Castro of Cuba crossing their ideological divide to join in celebrating Mandela’s remarkable life.
