One of China’s most famous film directors has been fined Rmb7.5m ($1.2m) for violating the so-called one child policy, one of the largest publicised penalties for exceeding quotas which limit the size of mainland families.
The family planning authorities in the Binhu district of the eastern Chinese city of Wuxi, home to Zhang Yimou’s wife Chen Ting, gave the director 30 days to appeal against the fine or pay what is known as a “social maintenance fee” for excess children.
Last year Mr Zhang, who scripted the extravagant 2008 Beijing Olympics opening and closing ceremonies and is famous abroad for the sumptuous film Raise the Red Lantern, apologised for having three children with Ms Chen.
