Fading stars

For hotels in austerity China, only one thing can top a five-star rating – a four-star rating, reports Josh Noble in Hong Kong.

Last year, with overall Chinese hotel revenues falling amid President Xi Jinping’s clampdown on lavish spending, more than 50 asked to have their five-star ratings cut. The state-run news service Xinhua said the move was an effort to regain business from chastened Communist party officials.

Some other hotels suspended applications for five-star gradings in the hope of staying on state registers of acceptably austere accommodation.
