Bitcoin’s much mythologised founder, Satoshi Nakamoto, may have been hiding in plain sight all along – as a 64-year-old Japanese American called Satoshi Nakamoto.
Ever since the 2009 issue of the white paper outlining the rules of the virtual currency, the Satoshi name attached to it was thought to be a pseudonym.
For years the Bitcoin community has speculated about the identity of Mr Nakamoto, creating an elaborate foundation story around the nearly $7bn of Bitcoins that are now in circulation. Previous guesses included economist Nick Szabo, the man behind a proposal called Bit Gold, as well as the US and Russian security services.
