Japan set to end ban on weapons exports

Japan is poised to end a decades-old self-imposed ban on weapons exports as the government seeks to cut away postwar restraints on the military and bolster its defence industry.

The move is expected to be approved by Shinzo Abe’s cabinet this month after his ruling Liberal Democratic party produced looser guidelines governing exports of weapons and weapon components.

Reversing the ban is politically sensitive in Japan and other parts of Asia. China has criticised Japan’s review of its existing constraints, known as the “three principles”.
