Phuntsog Wangyal, Tibetan Communist, 1922-2014

The Tibetan who was one of the Chinese Communist party’s most important ethnic allies but who later came to regret his pro-Beijing, stance died at the weekend, leaving a plea for the return of the Dalai Lama from exile.

Phuntsog Wangyal, more commonly known as Phunwang, died at the age of 92 in his home in Beijing on Sunday.

Shortly before his death, his 432-page “political will and testament” – A Long Way to Equality and Unity – was smuggled out of China to be published in Chinese by New Century Press, a Hong Kong publishing house specialising in history that often runs counter to official Communist party accounts.
