Chinese police have released eight people who were detained after taking part in a demonstration in Guangzhou on Tuesday against a planned chemical plant in another city in Guangdong province.

Hundreds of protesters took to the streets of Guangzhou, the provincial capital, on Tuesday to support residents of Maoming city where authorities intend to build a plant to manufacture the toxic chemical paraxylene (PX).
