Chinese state-owned miner Chinalco is upgrading environmental protections at its halted Toromocho copper project in Peru after a local authority alleged it was contaminating lakes.
Chinalco, which is attempting to resettle 3500 villagers to make way for the $2.2bn Toromocho project, stopped commissioning operations at the mine in late March.
The environmental impact of mines is a thorny issue in Peru, whose copper reserves are often located near villages of indigenous communities.
