The US and Japan have failed to seal a bilateral trade deal during Barack Obama’s visit to Tokyo, leaving in place a major stumbling block for broader Pacific Rim trade talks.
Despite encouraging public statements on Thursday from Mr Obama and Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe, negotiators failed to overcome differences over Japanese agricultural tariffs and the automobile trade.
The leaders had raised hopes that an agreement in principle might be reached before Mr Obama left for Seoul on Friday, speaking of the need to conclude a deal “very quickly” and for both sides to make compromises outside their “comfort zones”.
