Anti-China protests spread across Vietnam

Violent anti-China protests spread to central Vietnam with reports of at least one death in overnight clashes at a steel mill in the Ha Tinh region as maritime tensions in the South China Sea continued to spill over into the business world.

The latest violence followed attacks on Chinese and Taiwanese-owned factories in a Singapore-run industrial park near Ho Chi Minh City, in the south of the country, on Tuesday and Wednesday. The unrest forced manufacturers, many of which make goods for consumers around the world, to suspend production.

On Wednesday evening, the industrial zone’s management said police and security guards had “re-established security control”. It said 99 tenants had been hit by the protests and that four Chinese and Taiwanese factories had been set on fire.
