Intel has lost a long-running court bid to reduce a hefty €1.1bn fine levied by EU competition regulators on the US semiconductor giant for abusing its dominant position in the market for a crucial chip used to power computers.
The fine, imposed by the European Commission way back in 2009, relates to the market for Intel's "x86" central processing chips between 2002 and 2007, and whether it unfairly offered rebates to a range of computer makers to use its product over those from rival Advanced Micro Devices,or AMD.
The EU General Court on Thursday upheld the fine, ruling that none of the arguments presented by Intel merited a discount.
