Gazprom demands upfront payments from Ukraine after talks fail

Gazprom will supply Ukraine with gas that has been paid for in advance “from today”, the Russian state-controlled energy giant said on Monday after failing to reach a compromise after crunch talks in Kiev.

The move to prepayment makes a reduction of supplies to Ukraine increasingly likely, heralding the third “gas war” between the two countries in eight years and threatening deliveries to Europe.

It comes amid a fresh deterioration of relations between Moscow and Kiev as fighting between government troops and pro-Russia separatists in the east of the country enters a bloodier phase.
