SolarCity, the fast-growing rooftop solar power installation company, backed by technology entrepreneur Elon Musk, has announced plans to build a solar panel plant in New York state – defying a trend for manufacturing in Asia.
The company announced yesterday that it was buying Silevo for up to $350m and moving into panel manufacture.
SolarCity is in talks with New York state about building its first factory, which is intended to produce more than 1,000 megawatts of panels per year, within two years.
