Chinese newspaper scorns ‘eccentric’ Britain’s ‘declining empire’

A Communist-controlled Chinese newspaper has marked the end of a visit to London by the country’s premier with a withering editorial about the UK.

In an article published to coincide with the final day of Li Keqiang’s three-day visit, the Global Times called Britain an “old, declining empire” that resorts to “eccentric acts” to cover its waning importance.

The newspaper was apparently exercised by articles that appeared in British newspapers ahead of Mr Li’s trip revealing that the Chinese threatened to cancel the visit if the premier was not granted an audience with Queen Elizabeth.
