It's not just Apple customers who will be able to brick their phone.
Google and Microsoft will incorporate technology into the next versions of their mobile operating systems that allow users to lock and erase lost or stolen phones remotely.
The plan was announced on Thursday by New York attorney general Eric Schneiderman, which last year put pressure on Apple to introduce the feature.
