UK avoids taking view on concerns over Hong Kong’s autonomy

The UK government has avoided taking a stance on a controversial Chinese document on Hong Kong that has sparked concerns about the future of judicial independence in its former colony.

China in June released a “white paper” on Hong Kong which stated that judges in the territory must be “patriotic” – an assertion that critics interpreted as being loyal to the Communist party.

It also said there were limits to the “high degree of autonomy” that Hong Kong was granted under the “one country, two system” principle agreed by Deng Xiaoping and Margaret Thatcher before the handover.
