Shinzo Abe sought meeting with Xi Jinping over Japan-China ties

Shinzo Abe said on Monday he sought a meeting with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping at a gathering of Asia-Pacific leaders in Beijing in November, in what would be the first summit between Japanese and Chinese leaders since relations broke down over a territorial dispute in 2012.

The Japanese prime minister made the overture – it is not his first, though so far none has been accepted by China – during a parliamentary committee meeting, in response to questioning about the dismal state of Japan-China ties.

“It’s extremely regrettable that we haven’t been able to meet,” he said. “Even if there have been problems, maintaining contact is the basis of a mutually respectful strategic relationship.”
