The most prominent civic activist among China’s Uighur minority has been indicted on charges of separatism, prosecutors in the frontier region of Xinjiang said.
The indictment on Wednesday of Ilham Tohti – an economist who ran a Chinese-language website covering Uighur affairs – comes amidst escalating violence in Xinjiang and a broader clampdown on journalists, online speech and civil rights activists across China.
The move coincides with a broad anti-corruption purge that this week netted the powerful former energy and security tsar.
