India on Monday abruptly cancelled peace talks with its neighbour and regional rival Pakistan. The cancellation came under three months after Indian prime minister Narendra Modi warmly shook hands at his inauguration in New Delhi with his Pakistani counterpart, Nawaz Sharif.
Syed Akbaruddin, India’s foreign ministry spokesman, announced that the Modi government had cancelled a visit to Islamabad next week by Sujatha Singh, foreign secretary, because of Pakistani “interference” in India’s internal affairs.
India was angered by an invitation from Abdul Basit, Pakistan’s high commissioner in New Delhi, to Kashmiri separatists for “consultations” with him before the proposed Islamabad meetings.
