UK top judge: HK independence not eroded

China’s recent policy statement has not undermined the independence of Hong Kong’s judicial system, according to the president of the UK Supreme Court who serves as a judge in the former British colony.

China sparked controversy in June with the publication of a “white paper” that said judges in the territory should be “patriotic”. The move prompted hundreds of lawyers to protest on the streets of the city and later led to the resignation of the president of the Hong Kong law society who had backed the paper.

Speaking in Hong Kong on Tuesday, Lord Neuberger said there was no evidence that the mainland Chinese government in Beijing had attempted to interfere with the judicial system in the territory.
