Jack Ma, the former English teacher who founded Chinese ecommerce giant Alibaba, broke the ice with potential investors on Monday with a laugh as he kicked off the first major event of the marketing tour for what could be the largest initial public offering ever.
Speaking to hundreds of investors who had filled the Starlight Roof at Manhattan’s Waldorf Astoria Hotel to hear the company’s pitch, Mr Ma told a story about travelling to Silicon Valley 15 years ago when Alibaba was in its infancy to raise $2m from venture capitalists, according to two people who attended the presentation. But the move was unsuccessful.
To a big laugh from the crowd, he said was back to ask for a bit more this time.
