Sterling jumped in late afternoon trading in New York after a second opinion poll suggested that the Scottish public will vote against independence next week, allaying fears of a potentially messy break-up of the Union.
The latest YouGov poll published late on Thursday put the 'No' vote at 52 per cent and the 'Yes' vote at 48 per cent.
It sent the pound as high as $1.627.
